One of the stories at the heart of the Smile Foundation is that of Thando, who was born with Moebius Syndrome, a condition that can cause partial or complete facial paralysis. As a little girl, Thando had never been able to smile. Her mother, Thabile, wrote letters each month asking for help, and eventually one reached former President Nelson Mandela.
At the time, South Africa did not yet have surgeons with the specialist experience to perform the complex facial reanimation procedure Thando needed. Rather than accepting that children would need to travel overseas for care, Dr Ron Zucker and Dr Craig van der Kolk were brought to Johannesburg to train Professor George Psaras. Thando received life-changing surgery, and her story became the beginning of a movement that has since helped thousands of children access reconstructive care and support.
For parents, it is a powerful reminder that confidence, connection and the freedom to smile should never depend on how a child looks. Through the Smile Foundation, children affected by facial conditions and burn injuries can access surgery, psychological support, therapy, family assistance and care throughout their treatment journey.
