As parents, we spend so much time waiting for those first clear sentences, but our kids are actually “speaking” to us long before they master grammar. From “Make-Believe” to Big Breakthroughs: How Their Brains Actually Process Play

We’ve all seen that look of pure focus when a child decides a simple cardboard box is a rocket ship. In the world of child development, this is “symbolic thought.” It’s the “Aha!” moment where their brain realizes that one thing can stand for another. This is the exact same mental muscle they’ll need for reading and maths later on.

Their voice has power

Beyond flexing their mental muscles, Playstation in itself is a classroom. Take our adventure maze, for instance.

When kids play together in the Adventure Maze, they are forced into “situational language.” They have to develop communication skills for kids in real-time to solve problems:

• Negotiation: “You go first, I’ll follow you.”
• Adjectives: “Watch out, the bridge is wobbly!”
• Sequencing: “First we climb, then we slide.”

They are learning that their voice has power. They are learning that they can use words to change their environment and connect with others.

A Sanctuary for Us (and Our Takkies) This March

The 2026 school holidays (which run from 27 March to 8 April) can feel like a marathon for parents. We want our kids to be active and learning, but we also wouldn’t mind a welcoming cup of coffee that we actually get to finish while it’s still warm.

That’s why we’ve kept the “parent experience” at the heart of Playstation by Rush in Kirstenhof. Our café offers full visibility of the play areas, so you can kick off your takkies, grab a barista-made coffee, and simply observe. There is something so rewarding about watching your child from a distance, seeing them navigate a social hurdle or conquer a climbing wall all on their own. It gives us a window into their world that we don’t always get at home.

The autumn break is a precious time to slow down and listen to what your child’s play is telling you. Because we want to keep the environment safe and stimulating, we do cap our visitor numbers, and our holiday slots—especially around the Family Day public holiday on 6 April—fill up fast.
